CASE STUDY: City of Bunker Hill, Illinois – Wastewater Treatment/Collection System
Client Need
The City of Bunker Hill had three lagoon cells (20 acres), no aeration, a failed rock filter, and heavy inflow/infiltration in their collection system. They had continuous and repeated effluent violations, including high effluent TSS, CBOD, ammonia, and fecal. In order to correct such problems, the City needed over $3 Million in funding.
HA Engineered Solution
HA assessed treatment and system-wide collection options, including smoke testing and video televising of 78,000 LF of sanitary sewer main and 220 manholes. A Preliminary Engineering Report was written meeting IEPA and funding agency requirements. The project consisted of surveying and engineering design, IEPA permitting, bidding and award assistance, and construction administration and observation. Illinois DCEO and USDA Rural Development grant and low-interest loan financing assistance was obtained.
Results of HA/Client Partnership
The new wastewater treatment and collection system resulted in three lagoon cells (10 acres footprint), aeration, and an advanced aerated rock filter. In addition, a wet weather lagoon (10 acres) and a transfer lift station were constructed, with collection pipes being rehabilitated and replaced. The resulting treatment and collection system continuously meets IEPA effluent standards: TSS of 14.5, CBOD of 4.8, fecal of 20 or less, ammonia of 0.69, and phosphorus of 0.9. The system even met effluent standards during the 11-inch rain event of late-December 2015.
